Hitting airwaves in the summer of 2000, Gettin' in the Way introduced songstress/spoken word artist Jill Scott to the music scene. Over a smooth jazzy backdrop, Jilly lets her man's ex-girlfriend know that she's out of line for her antics and it has to stop. "Sister girl, I know you don't understand/But you gon' have to understand he's my man now/What you had is gone/Our thing is sweet/Our thing is stronger than any lie you can tell on me ... He let you go a long time ago/Now it's time to turn him loose." She has to up the ante since the chick's not getting the message. "Sugar honey girl, fly, fly away/I been a lady up til' now/Don't know how much more I can take/Queens shouldn't swing if you know what I mean/But I'm 'bout to take my earrings off/Get me some Vaseline!" That and the threat of "I'm gon' take you out in the middle of the street and whoop yo tail/For all it's worth/5.99 or something like that!" should do the trick. The best thing about the song is that it takes the tired "I'ma beat you down cuz he's my man!" stereotype on its head and takes it in a more refreshing direction. Jill's not looking for a fight, but she's certainly not about to be disrespected. The MJ Cole remix adds in a dance beat that livens up the original's cool tempo with great success. Be sure to check out the video. Shot in Jill's North Philly neighborhood, the diva receives a curt call from her guy's ex and marches right over to her place to tell her off. Everyone from the fellas playing dominoes on the corner to the women hanging out on their porches get a front row viewing of the smackdown Jilly's nemesis gets. Love it!
