This is the first Skye Jethani book I've read. Perhaps the only other theologian whose writings have touched me so is Philip Yancey. I don't mean to compare these two gentlemen. They write and think differently, although I am sure both their hearts love Jesus. I want my heart to love Jesus, too.I say that because that's how I felt every time I finish reading a Yancey book. And that's how I felt after reading With.With is one of those teachings that when you grasp it, if God's grace opens your heart and mind to its teaching, you see it everywhere—in Scripture and in your every day life. I know that's true for me. Every time I read the Bible now (and I am a slow reader, I read very small portions each day to meditate upon), the truth gleams at me: God wants to be with me. God wants me to be with Him. True life is with God, and no other.Jethani describes four postures that humankind has used to manage our fear and lack of control: life under God, life over God, life from God, and life for God; all of these are a sad consequence of life after Eden. I will tell you that I have, in various moments in my life, been totally absorbed and committed to each of these postures. These postures are false religions, a form of idolatry, and reading through the With brings a Holy Spirit-induced conviction and repentance in me. These sections of the book are not meant for us to judge other Christians, but to help us look within ourselves and confess where these postures have taken root, so that Jesus may come in there and uproot them. We need forgiveness for these postures. I know I do.It must have taken so much courage for Jethani to write this book, because it strikes right at the heart of the hypocrisies of modern Christians and Christianity. If I ever get the chance to interview him (perhaps over Zoom—hey, you never know!), that's one of the first questions I'll ask.Jethani then describes the Biblical posture or design, the one God Himself desires for us with all His heart, and that's why He sent His Son and poured out His Spirit: Life with God. This quick summary I write here does not begin to bring justice to the book, I'm afraid. I truly hope you read it for yourself.It has nine short chapters and two helpful appendices, but it took me a month to truly chew on the teachings. My prayer is that every pastor who believes and loves Jesus will read this book and teach it to the church congregations. I believe a deep repentance will commence, and from there, by God's grace, a deep revival. By deep revival, what I mean is not a spiritual fervor in stadia filled to the brim with people hearing the Gospel for the first time and going emotional. What I mean is for Christians to daily seek the Lord, to desire to live life with Him, every day and in every way. An inner transformation towards being truly salt and light, affecting the world in a profound way.
