I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am sad now that it’s over - I wish Stephen Barrett would write another book! The book is so well written that I feel as if I was along for the ride on these amazing adventures. The book is appropriately named as Stephen does seem to be an unlikely choice for a missionary and the lessons learned along the way are quite interesting! The book gave deep insight into the various cultures he and his wife Cindi encountered. He compares and contrasts these cultures and gave good information about different approaches to life, priorities, decision making, etc. I particularly chuckled when he talked about the communal attitudes of Mongolians, their generosity in sharing their possessions and how he had to learn to share as well!I like how the book is a compilation of many stories and experiences. It made it easier to read a few stories at a time and then be able to ponder them for a couple of days before moving on to read a couple more. The stories are everything you would want in an entertaining book - funny, thought-provoking, insightful, sad, scary, action-packed and informative.Mostly I enjoyed Stephen’s spiritual perspective and how he related these experiences to his Christian faith. He was very humble and transparent in sharing what he saw and learned as well as the mistakes he made. If you want a great read about modern day adventure and faith, then this is the book for you!
