Sanchez, Desi 2012 A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Freedom, iUniverse, Bloomington, Indiana. ISBN-10 1475955200 ISBN-13 978-1475955200.A valuable personal history telling of the way it was in Cuba at the time of the Bay of Pigs in Havana. The narration is exciting and suspenseful. When I got the time when he began to talk about the cargo ship in which he was going, he thought, to escape Cuba, the name of the vessel struck me as familiar...This book has many uncommon or unreported accounts of the Bay of Pigs action. Of special interest is the journey out of the danger zone after the defeat. However, the part about the author's early life adolescence and young manhood, were particularly vivid. I do recall for instance visiting with my Escolapios of Guanabacoa fellow students what may well have been the same lumber yard, for a high-school project on exotic woods. This returned a memory of magnificent tropical lumber.Sanchez's description of the sexual more's of young males in Havana and of the role that the carefully monitored and healthy prostitutes of that era, really made me regret my then fervently chaste and far too Irish Catholicism of that time.In vivid description the author apparently describes without naming it, the bordello of Marina. And compares it to the bitter life of the jineteras of the present Castro era. This is a great read, and I recommend it to all.
