In this collection of short stories by Susan Perabo, the reader is offered the pure delight of entering entire worlds with real characters. While the stories tackle high-stake topics of love and loss like: an extra-marital affair in “Michael the Armadillo”, children witnessing sex, “Payoff,” a mother’s cancer diagnosis, “Indulgence”, and a unique and non-sentimental story about a woman’s actions after her discovery of a lump in her breast and a reclusive man in “Shelter.” Perabo gives us her deft wit and light hand throughout these subtle and engrossing pages. The characters’ dialogue snaps. If you are looking for an enjoyable reading experience and you would like to: be moved, laugh, maybe cry some, be awed, and even transformed, you won’t be disappointed. While selecting a favorite story in this collection is like saying which of my children I love best, I’ll say my same answer: I love them all for different reasons. Disclosure: I had the good fortune of studying with Perabo years ago in my graduate program. She was an excellent teacher, too.
