Description
Review A creative outlet for south London's serial-heartbreaker Bob Wratten, The Field Mice never really reached their full potential, hampered by inter-band relationships, but this 36-song collection paints a picture of a group equally at home with a battered acoustic or flirting with technology. -- New Musical Express

If you heard any of the singles by the Field Mice during the 1980s and early 90s, then you know how magical and memorable this music was. Thus, this 2-CD compilation of the material that they recorded for the great Sarah Records label will be a MUST buy for anyone that was smitten by the band's sound. As others have noted, this collection doesn't contain everything the band recorded, but it has the essential cuts and more.Trying to describe the band's sound is difficult. There is the obvious guitar jangle factor on their early records, with more electronic and keyboard-laden experiments later in their career. I like the one reference to them as "the missing link between the Smiths and Belle & Sebastian." That's not bad, but I'd also thrown in Aztec Camera, the Go-Betweens, and a bit of New Order as other touchstones. But then again, the Field Mice don't directly sound like any of those acts. Maybe you can dissect the lyrics and find weakness, and perhaps not all of the songs on here are winners, but for the most part this is a very satisfying compilation. When this band nails it, they truly capture the listener's imagination. Tuneful songs with passion and energy, and it still sounds refreshing 20 years later.
